Recumbent/Fallen

Oil, graphite, pastel, mineral spirit wash; 92” x 65”

Note about the picture :

The ambiguity of the title, Recumbent/Fallen, does not reveal whether the animal is resting, wounded or deceased creating uncertainty for the viewer. That uncertainty recalls the human experience where we long for certainty in an uncertain existence but must tolerate the lack of that or argue within ourselves that certitude is attainable, bypassing the discomfort that uncertainty - existential and otherwise - is, emphatically, the only certitude. Even the red marks do not reveal a hint as to the animal’s condition. Are they careless smatterings of the artist, compositional conceits or something else?
